Finding Us on Mint Street, Sowcarpet

Mint Street runs north through the middle of Sowcarpet, and it has been Chennai’s fabric and textile quarter for well over a century. We are at number 144, close to the New Jain Temple, on the stretch where the wholesale houses give way to retail counters. If you have never been to Mint Street, Sowcarpet before, the easiest landmark to aim for is the temple — every auto driver in the area knows it.
Getting Here
From Chennai Central we are a ten minute auto ride, or a twenty minute walk north-west through Broadway. From Egmore, take an auto directly; roughly fifteen minutes outside peak hours. By Metro, Government Estate and High Court are the nearest stations, both a short ride from Mint Street, Sowcarpet. Driving in is possible but not advisable on weekdays — the street is narrow, one-way in stretches, and busy with loading for most of the day.
Parking
There is no dedicated parking outside the shop. Most customers who drive leave their vehicle on one of the cross streets and walk the last two minutes. Two-wheelers can usually be parked closer. If you are collecting a heavy wholesale order, message us on WhatsApp in advance and we will have the packages brought out to you.
The Best Time to Visit
Weekday mornings between eleven and one are the calmest hours, and the daylight then is the most honest for matching shades. Saturdays fill up from midday. On Sunday we close at two in the afternoon, when Mint Street, Sowcarpet is quieter than usual — some customers prefer it that way. Through wedding season and the weeks before Diwali, expect the whole quarter to be crowded, so come early if you can.
What to Bring When You Are Matching Fabric
If you are matching a blouse to a saree, bring the saree itself rather than a photograph of it. Screens shift colour, and a shade that looks correct on a phone is often wrong against the cloth. The same is true for a lining or a dupatta. Bring your measurements if you have them, and your tailor’s requirement in meters if you know it — we cut by the meter and would rather give you the exact length than round it up.
Retail and Wholesale at the Same Counter
Both are welcome. Retail customers can buy from a single meter. Wholesale and trade buyers — boutiques, designers, tailoring units and resellers — should say so when they arrive or when they message, so the right rate card and the bulk rolls come out. For larger orders we can hold stock, arrange packing, and ship anywhere in India or overseas. If you cannot reach Mint Street, Sowcarpet in person, send us a photograph of what you are matching and we will send back video of the actual roll in natural light.
